How to set up your Blockrise wallet

The Blockrise wallet is created inside the Blockrise app as the final step of the personal account onboarding flow. Wallet setup begins while the account is under review by the Blockrise compliance team, which typically takes a few minutes. Setting up the wallet generates the Blockrise Seed, configures authentication, and registers the device on the account.

This article covers the standard setup, called Quick Setup. Quick Setup uses Cloud Recovery to store the encrypted Blockrise Seed and includes the Blockrise Back-up service. An alternative method, in which the Blockrise Seed is stored offline by the client, is described in [How to set up your Blockrise wallet using Advanced Setup].

Before starting

The following are required before starting wallet setup:

  • A Blockrise account that has been submitted for review, or an approved account.
  • The Blockrise app installed on iOS or Android.
  • iCloud enabled on iOS, or Google Drive enabled on Android.
  • A device passcode or biometric method configured on the device.

Step 1: Start the setup

Open the Blockrise app. The Welcome screen confirms that the next steps will register the device and generate the Blockrise Seed. Tap Continue to start.

Step 2: Choose a PIN

Choose a six-digit PIN. This PIN is required to open the app and to authorise transactions. Enter the PIN, then enter the same PIN again on the confirmation screen.

Step 3: Enable biometrics

The second authentication step is required together with the PIN whenever a transaction is authorised in the app. On iOS, this step uses Face ID. On Android, the equivalent biometric method is used. If biometrics are not available, the device passcode can be used instead.

Tap Enable Face ID (or the biometric equivalent on Android), or tap Use device passcode as an alternative.

Step 4: Name the device

The device is added to the list of authorised devices for the account. A recognisable name (for example, "iPhone 15 Pro") makes it easier to identify later, especially when multiple devices are registered. Devices can be deactivated afterwards from the account settings.

Enter a device name and tap Continue.

Step 5: Choose Quick Setup

Two setup methods are available:

  • Quick Setup: the Blockrise Seed is encrypted on the device and stored using Cloud Recovery. The Blockrise Back-up service is included.
  • Advanced Setup: the Blockrise Seed is stored offline by the client. The Blockrise Back-up service is optional. See [How to set up your Blockrise wallet using Advanced Setup] for the full flow.

Select Quick Setup (labelled "Easy mode" in the current app version) and tap Continue.

Step 6: Add the Blockrise Back-up service

Quick Setup includes the Blockrise Back-up service. The screen explains what this service does:

  • Stichting Blockrise holds a Back-up key that can authorise recovery actions.
  • With this Back-up key, Blockrise can help recover access to bitcoin held with Blockrise if the client loses access to their device and to their cloud-stored Blockrise Seed.
  • Adding the Back-up key is free. If recovery is needed later, the recovery service is available for €999.

Tick the acknowledgment checkbox to confirm understanding, then tap Continue with Back-up.

Step 7: Turn on Cloud Recovery

The Blockrise Seed is encrypted on the device before anything leaves the phone. The encrypted Blockrise Seed is then stored in the client's iCloud (iOS) or Google Drive (Android) account. The encryption key is held separately by Blockrise. Neither piece can access the wallet on its own. See [How Cloud Recovery works] for the full technical detail.

Tap Turn on iCloud sync on iOS or Turn on Google Drive sync on Android. Confirm the permission when the operating system prompts.

Step 8: Setup completes

The app runs four steps in sequence and shows their progress on screen:

  1. Wallet generated
  2. Blockrise Back-up enabled
  3. Encrypted Blockrise Seed synced to iCloud or Google Drive
  4. Device registered

When all four are complete, the app displays Account Successfully Created. The wallet is ready to use.

After setup

The app returns to the PIN login screen. Entering the PIN opens the account.

If the compliance review of the account is still in progress at this point, the app will indicate that the account is under review. The account becomes fully active for deposits and transactions once the review is complete.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Blockrise Seed?
The Blockrise Seed is the authorisation credential that controls the bitcoin held in a Blockrise account. See [What is the Blockrise Seed?] for a full explanation.

How does the encrypted cloud backup work?
The encrypted Blockrise Seed is stored in the client's iCloud or Google Drive account. The encryption key is held separately by Blockrise. Neither piece can access the wallet on its own. See [How Cloud Recovery works] for the full technical detail, including the encryption standard and how the two pieces are separated.

What does the Blockrise Back-up service cover?
Blockrise Back-up allows Stichting Blockrise to hold a Back-up key that can authorise recovery of a Blockrise account if the client loses access to their device and to their cloud-stored Blockrise Seed. Adding the Back-up key is free. Recovery, if needed, is available for €999.

Can multiple devices be registered to one account?
Yes. Additional devices can be added from the account settings. Each device is authorised independently.

What happens if the device is lost?
The wallet can be restored on a new device by signing in and reconnecting the same iCloud or Google Drive account. If both the device and the cloud account are lost, the Blockrise Back-up service can be used to recover access for €999.

If I have any questions, who do I contact?
The Blockrise support team is available at support@blockrise.com.
