How to set up your Blockrise wallet using Advanced Setup
Advanced Setup is the wallet setup method in which the client stores the Blockrise Seed offline, following the traditional bitcoin seed phrase approach. This method places full responsibility for the Blockrise Seed with the client. The Blockrise Back-up service is optional under Advanced Setup.
For most clients, Quick Setup is the recommended method because it removes the need to store a written seed phrase. See How to set up your Blockrise wallet for the Quick Setup flow.
Before starting
The following are required before starting Advanced Setup:
- A Blockrise account that has been submitted for review, or an approved account.
- The Blockrise app installed on iOS or Android.
- A device passcode or biometric method configured on the device.
- A secure offline location to record the 24-word Blockrise Seed, such as paper or a metal seed plate.
Steps 1 to 4: PIN, biometrics, and device
These steps are identical to Quick Setup. The client chooses a six-digit PIN, confirms it, enables biometrics (Face ID on iOS, or the biometric equivalent on Android), and names the device. See How to set up your Blockrise wallet Steps 1 to 4 for the detail.
Step 5: Choose Advanced Setup
On the Setup method screen, select Advanced Setup (labelled "Advanced mode" in the current app version) and tap Continue.
Step 6: Choose whether to add the Blockrise Back-up service
Advanced Setup makes the Blockrise Back-up service optional. Two paths are available:
- Add the Back-up service: Stichting Blockrise holds a Back-up key that can authorise recovery actions. Adding the Back-up key is free. Recovery, if needed, is available for €999. This adds a fallback recovery route in case the offline seed is lost.
- Continue without Back-up: no fallback recovery is available from Blockrise. If the offline Blockrise Seed is lost, access to the bitcoin cannot be restored.
Tap Continue with Back-up or Continue without Back-up as appropriate.
Step 7: Write down the Blockrise Seed
The app displays the 24 words of the Blockrise Seed. Write down each word in order, on paper or another secure offline medium. Store the written Blockrise Seed in a safe location. The Blockrise Seed is not shown again after this step.
Tap Continue once the Blockrise Seed has been written down.
Step 8: Confirm the Blockrise Seed
The app asks the client to re-enter selected words from the Blockrise Seed to confirm it has been recorded correctly. Enter the requested words in the order shown.
Step 9: Setup completes
The app runs the setup steps and shows their progress on screen. When complete, the app displays Account Successfully Created. The wallet is ready to use.
After setup
The app returns to the PIN login screen. Entering the PIN opens the account.
If the compliance review of the account is still in progress at this point, the app will indicate that the account is under review. The account becomes fully active for deposits and transactions once the review is complete.
