What is the Blockrise Seed?
The Blockrise Seed is an authorization seed, consisting of 24 randomly generated words. It allows clients to sign transactions securely in the Blockrise dashboard. The owner of this seed has exclusive access to the digital assets held in their Blockrise account. Without the Blockrise Seed, it is impossible to move any funds stored with Blockrise.
It's important to note that your Blockrise Seed is not the same as your private key. Your private key is safely stored on one of Blockrise’s Hardware Security Modules (HSMs), which are programmed to be inaccessible to anyone but you. To access and use your private key, you need the right form of authorization. This is where your authorization key is required as an extra security layer.
The difference between an authorization key and an authorization seed
A seed and a key contain the same information, but they have different appearances. If you would compare them with a QR code, the seed would be the user-friendly QR code that acts as a stand-in for a URL, or, in this case, the key. Because a cryptographic key is made up of 128 random characters, it is impractical for daily usage. That’s why a 24-word seed is much more convenient for clients, while it retains the same level of authority as a key.
At Blockrise, you receive your Blockrise Seed during the Key Ceremony. This seed is derived from your authorization key, which has been translated to your Blockrise Seed for more convenient usage. Using your 24-word Blockrise Seed, you can sign transactions manually or use it to install the Blockrise App as another method to sign transactions.
Generating your Blockrise Seed
Every client receives their own Blockrise Seed for the authorization of all transactions in the Blockrise dashboard. This occurs during the Key Ceremony as part of the onboarding process.
Write down your Blockrise Seed carefully and make sure not to lose it. It's crucial to protect your Blockrise Seed by following these golden tips:
- Write down the Blockrise Seed on two separate sheets of paper.
- Do not share the Blockrise Seed with anyone.
- Make sure that nobody but you has access to the Blockrise Seed.
- Make sure that the Blockrise Seed is not lost.
Without your Blockrise Seed, you are not authorized to make any transactions, meaning that you cannot move funds to or from your account. Blockrise does not have access to or a backup of your Blockrise Seed. If you lose your Blockrise Seed, you lose access to your funds permanently. Soon, Blockrise will introduce Notarial Backup to prevent this single point of failure.
Using your Blockrise Seed
When you initiate a crypto transaction inside your Blockrise account, you will be asked to sign the transaction. You can sign the transaction by manually filling in your Blockrise Seed or by using your Blockrise App to scan a QR code.
Please note that team members at Blockrise would never ask for your Blockrise Seed. If someone claiming to be working at Blockrise approaches you and asks for your Blockrise Seed, please notify us immediately.
